Azerbaijan may face a serious demographic problem

Azerbaijani Parliamentary International and Interparliamentary Relations Committee Deputy Chairman Gultakin Hajibeyli believes the demographic situation in the country deteriorated compared to the data of 30 years ago.

"I am sure the Azerbaijani society will not face the same demographic problem as Europe. However, one should recognize that population growth in the country decreased, compared to the situation of 30 years ago. It is particularly regrettable that the number of newborn girls declines," Hajibeyli said. "From this point of view of Azerbaijan may face a rather serious demographic problem in 15-20 years."

She said the opportunity to choose the sex of the child in the future could lead to a demographic problem. "Families have the opportunity to select the sex of the child giving the advantage to boys, which, in turn, may lead to certain problems in the future," she said.

However, in general, neither Azerbaijan, nor Turkey will face this problem in the near future.

Today, Azerbaijan turns from a migration source-country into a country of destination of migrants, she said. "Presently, we may see migrants from Iraq, Iran, China, Afghanistan and Philippines in our cities and even in the villages. These people come to Azerbaijan in connection with more favorable working conditions and better economic opportunities," Hajibeyli said.

On the other hand, Azerbaijani migrants in Russia desire to return to Azerbaijan, when the economic crisis hits hard. 

"Undoubtedly, creation of favorable environment for entrepreneurship and strengthening support for entrepreneurs will increase the number of azerbaijanis who wish to return home," Hajibeyli said.
