Intensification of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan is precursor of earthquakes - PHOTOS

Azerbaijani geologists consider intensification of mud volcanoes in Azerbaijan as a precursor of earthquakes, head of Institute of Geology "mud volcanoes" department, doctor of geological-mineralogical sciences Adil Aliyev said.

"Research conducted by the institute showed that the volcanic activity in the mud volcanoes activates before weak earthquakes (2-3 points). Gas exudes. Water with chemical elements increases. They confirm that somewhere there is preparation for earthquake," geologist said.

He said that the Institute of Geology, together with Azerbaijani seismological service plans to daily monitor volcanic activity.

"According to the results of monitoring, exact connection of mud volcanoes with occurring earthquakes will be revealed. Head of "mud volcanoes" department noted that afterwards earthquakes can be partially predicted," Aliyev said.

There are about 40-45% of all mud world volcanoes in Azerbaijan.
