What is more important: spread or distortion of Azerbaijani language?

27 April 2010 [17:40] - TODAY.AZ
Changes in the Azerbaijani language due to inclusion of new foreign words is an issue less important rather than its spread and development, head of the "Chap Evi” printing house  Shahbaz Khuduoglu told reporters at a press conference on the protection of the state language in Baku.

"Today we should talk not only about  protection of the language, but also its dissemination, for example, on the European continent,” Khuduoglu said.

“English is called language of Shakespeare and Russian – language of Pushkin. And what about the Azerbaijani language?”

He said since literature shapes a language, and not television, it is necessary to allocate funds for promotion of Azerbaijani literature abroad.

However, according to a well-known television journalist Gulu Maharramli, although a language is an organism that requires development, the changes that occur in the Azerbaijani language cannot be ignored.

“Some people distort language, change place of stress in words, replace the letters and pronunciation,” Maharramli added.

“Some people use of foreign words in Azerbaijani speech even without knowing their meaning."

In his opinion, each of us can speak as he/she wishes, but Azerbaijani language should preserve conservatism on television.
