29 April 2010 [10:05] - TODAY.AZ
The last meeting of the committee on name and last name determined the final suggestion in connection with the names, said the chairman of the Committee of the Azerbaijani Parliament.

"Before, it was envisaged that everyone can give their child a new surname. But this proposal will not be implemented yet. The names with the endings "ov", "ev" will be without end or they will be added the end of the "ly", "li", "lu"and "lyu". The fact is that about 80% of the surnames in Azerbaijan have endings "ov", "ev", about 10% of names - "li", "lu", "lyu" and about 10% of names - "zadeh," the chairman of the committee on culture of Parliament of Azerbaijan, MP Nizami Jafarov, said.

A special commission created by the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan is preparing a concept on the surnames.

According to the 1993 Law on brining names of citizens of Azerbaijan in line with the state language, the citizens can change the end "-ov", "-ev", in their names into "-li", ("-li","-lu" "lyu", depending on the root of the word) "-zadeh," "oglu", "qizi" or completely remove the end.

According to a recent decision of the committee, will be offered other forms without endings and form of ending "oglu", said the chairman of the committee.

"Forms of ending "gizi" will not be introduced. But the females can also take the form of her name for the end "-oglu". According to Azerbaijani traditions, in most cases, women are taking the surnames of men." said Jafarov.
