“During our recent visit to Azerbaijan we concerned ourselves with the problems of Iranian students studying there. We are dissatisfied with the state of education of Iranian students studying medicine in Azerbaijan,” Iran’s Deputy Minister of Health Dr. Mahammadali Mohaggigi said.
He said when in Azerbaijan in February, Health Minister of Iran Marziya Vahid Destcerdi met with the Iranian students, concerned herself with their condition and learned that they had many problems.
According to the Deputy Minister, as they are not satisfied with the level of education of the Iranian students in Azerbaijan, they consider the diplomas issued by the Azerbaijan Medical University invalid.
“The names of all Azerbaijani educational institutions have been removed from the list of the Health Ministry of Iran,” he said.
Mohaggigi said no one was sent from Iran to study medicine in Azerbaijan and the process had been stopped.
Mohaggi said that they were very concerned over this situation and that they would take appropriate measures to solve education problems of Iranian students.
Head of teaching department of Azerbaijan Medical University Nasimi Gasimov said many Iranian students are studying at the university at present.
“As a rule, Iranian students' diplomas are confirmed in their country once they return home. According to unofficial information, Iran sends a lot of students to Armenia and without any problem recognize their diplomas. But most of the Iranian students studying in Azerbaijan do not return after they complete education and leave for European countries. We know that their diplomas are being recognized in Finland, Germany and Switzerland. And most of the students can not get their diplomas confirmed as valid after they return to Iran”.
Gasimov noted that formerly Iranian students studying in Azerbaijan were not admitted to examinations to confirm validality of their diplomas.
"But later Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan and adviser of the embassy visited our university many times, and then Iranian students were admitted to examination there. Iranian students study better than any other foreign students at the Medical University. Lately, many medical faculties have been opened in Iran. Maybe, that is why, Iran has spread such information. But on the other hand, most of the Iranian students studying at the Azerbaijan Medical University are Azerbaijanis by origin. They raise awareness of their compatriots after they return to Iran. And that is why such statements by Iran are political maneuver and blackmail. Nothing more."
