Azerbaijani President chairs meeting to discuss ways of eliminating consequences of Kura River overflow - PHOTOS

On May 7, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev presided over a meeting aimed at discussing ways of eliminating consequences of a flood as a result of the rise of water level in the Kur River. The President said the flood affected the country's 40 regions.

“Some 20,000 homes gone under water, with 300 of them destroyed and 2,000 becoming unsafe. Some 50,000 ha of cultivated land and pasture have been flooded.”

“Efforts have been underway to strengthen security measures in an aftermath of the flood, and those affected have been evacuated and have been receiving necessary help,” President Ilham Aliyev said.

The President praised the government's preventive efforts, saying “if it was not for these measures the scale of the disaster could have been much greater and more devastating”. Aliyev gave instructions to relevant bodies to take extra measures and purchase necessary equipment to tackle similar emergency situations in future.

The President vowed the people affected by the flood would be given financial compensations and that their social problems would be solved.

Speakers at the meeting - emergency situations minister Kamaladdin Heydarov, health minister Ogtay Shiraliyev, transport minister Ziya Mammadov, agriculture minister Ismat Abbasov and ecology and natural resources minister Huseyngulu Bagirov - reported on the current situation in the affected areas and measures taken to tackle the flood.

The President gave instructions to relevant officials to strengthen efforts towards eliminating the consequences of the disaster.
