5th interparliamentary conference on HIV/AIDS ends in Baku

The 5th interparliamentary conference aimed at exploring priorities of regional cooperation in improving HIV/AIDS legislation has wrapped up.
The event brought together MPs and government officials from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, Russian and Ukrainian experts, as well as representatives of international organizations, including the United Nations.

Speaking at the last day of the conference, Hadi Rajabli, chief of the social policy commission at the Azerbaijani parliament, called HIV “one of the most terrible threats facing world today”.
Musa Guliyev, an Azeri MP, made a report highlighting ways of preventing HIV among drug addicts.

Other reporters included Sergey Dvoryak, Director of Ukrainian institute of social health research, Nina Kerimi, Coordinator of UN Office on Drugs and Crime, and Leyla Imanova, head of Open Society Institute program.

The event ended with the adoption of a declaration on strengthening interparliamentary cooperation to prevent HIV/AIDS. The next conference will be held in Dushanbe in 2011.
