Japanese and Indian bananas in Azerbaijan: which ones grow, and which dont?

24 June 2010 [15:07] - TODAY.AZ
Alasgarovs family in Zabrat settlement in Baku outskirts have begun growing bananas on Absheron soil. Gulara Alasgarova says previous attempts to grow bananas in Azerbaijan have failed.
“We decided to plant a banana two years ago. Not every variety of this fruit survives in Azerbaijan. Some have tried to grow Japanese banana, but failed. We planted Indian banana and two years later received a harvest,” Alasgarova said.

Gulara’s son Rashad says he has discovered that the sandy soil, high temperatures and windy weather, which are common for Absheron Peninsula, are favorable for the Indian varieties of banana. He said that the tree is expected to give fruits by the end of the summer. Each bunch will give 30 kg of fruit. All family members watch over the tree every day, waiting impatiently for the results of their labor.

In turn, Director of the Central Botanical Garden of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Oruj Ibadly notes that it is possible to grow bananas in Azerbaijani soil, but the taste will be different.

"I have also grown bananas in Botanical Garden. They require 40-degree temperatures and special conditions. I think bananas grown in Azerbaijan will differ by taste," Ibadly added.
