Baku hosts annual IDB Symposium on Food Security

The Islamic Development Bank, IDB, has held its 21st Annual Symposium on “Achieving Food Security in Member Countries in Post-Crisis World” in Baku.
Opening the event, Azerbaijan`s Minister of Economic Development Shahin Mustafayev expressed hope it would contribute to strengthening cooperation among Islamic countries in ensuring food security. He stressed ensuring food security was one of the main priorities of the Azerbaijani government.

“We adopted a State Program to ensure food supply to the population in the Republic of Azerbaijan for 2008-2015.”

Mustafayev stressed state programs on poverty reduction, development of small and medium sized entrepreneurship and socio-economic development of the regions played significant role in strengthening the food security of the population.

Azerbaijani Minister said: “Azerbaijan is ready to share relevant experience with IDB member countries, and to develop bilateral and multilateral cooperation in this field.”

IDB Group president Ahmed Mohammed Ali said “the lack of food is one of the most serious problems facing every country today.”

“It is not accidental, that ensuring food security is one of the important issues on agenda of international organizations.”

The IDB Group president stressed the need for more investment in agriculture to insure food security. Minister of Agriculture Ismat Abbasov highlighted what the Azeri government had been doing to ensure food security in the country.
