It was Azerbaijan's initiative to reduce fishing quota in the Caspian Sea for the country, Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry's senior official Tariyel Mammadli said.
The meeting of the Commission on
Living Aquatic Resources of the Caspian Sea, which took place in Tehran, reduced Azerbaijan's quota for fishing in the Caspian Sea by 7 percent to 6.7 percent compared to 2008 ( the issue was not raised in 2009).
"Azerbaijan has announced implementation of the ban on fishing of two of four species of sturgeon in the country's river basins. This decision was taken by the Azerbaijani side to unilaterally reduce the quota of its own," Mammadli said.
Mammadli said Azerbaijan suggested to use biological resources only for fish farming and research, and called on all the littoral countries to join this initiative at the Tehran meeting.
The commission's next meeting to determine fishing quotas will be held in early December in Iran upon the Azerbaijani ministry's initiative.
