The Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Actions (ANAMA) began inspection of the mine-cleaned territories in the ancient city Karkamish near Gaziantep city of Turkey on borders with Syria, ANAMA operation manager Samir Poladov said.
Poladov said ANAMA Research and Quality Security Group were inspecting the territory. Additionally, one of the ANAMA officials was involved in the operations as an adviser.
The ANAMA manager noted that more than 1000 anti-tank and landmines were neutralized within the operations started in February by ANAMA and Nokta Inshaat consortium. “For the first time in the world, mine-cleaning actions are conducted in the ruins of ancient city. According to the agreement with the government officials, antique things, coins and others found by the field engineers are handed over to the government. The field engineers are working very carefully not to damage the historic monuments”, said Poladov.
ANAMA is looking forward for participation in other mine-cleaning projects in Turkey in the future, Poladov said. Nokta Inshaat-ANAMA consortium won a tender for cleaning of 680 thousand sq meters. Hand cleaning operations are conducted in Karkamish because it is a historic place. The territory was mined during a border problem between Turkey and Syria in 1960s.
