Azerbaijani border guards detain 408 border violators in 2010

During recent year the Azerbaijani border guards detained 408 border violators, Deputy Chairman   of the State Border Service, Major-General Mahammad Abbasguliyev said in an interview to the newspaper "Xalg gazeti".

According to him, 38 people who violated the state border, were arrested while crossing from Azerbaijan in other countries, 270 people were detained while crossing into the territory of Azerbaijan.

Abbasguliyev said that 57,6% of the violators of the state border are citizens of Azerbaijan, 11.3% - Iran, 7.8% - Georgia, 6.9% - Bangladesh, 3.9% - Pakistan, 3.2% - Russia, the rest are citizens of Turkey, Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, UK, Netherlands, Spain, Syria and other countries.

During this period, smuggling  worth 4,215 million manat was seized. Some 296 kg of narcotic drugs were seized from the illicit circulation. Border guards arrested and transferred 906 persons, who were wanted.

August 18, 1919 the Azerbaijani Parliament adopted a law "On formation of the border customs guarding of the Azerbaijani Republic". August 18 was declared a professional holiday of the personnel of the border troops by a decree signed by Heydar Aliyev Aug.16, 2000.
