Azerbaijani general prosecutor's office on electoral crimes

The Azerbaijani General Prosecutor's Office is considering criminal cases involving offenses committed during the elections held earlier in Azerbaijan, First Deputy General Prosecutor Rustam Usubov told journalists today.

"Two criminal cases were filed over violations committed in the Imishli and Masalli constituencies during the municipal elections in 2009. Under the law, the General Prosecutor's Office should consider the electoral crimes," Usubov said.

About 20 criminal cases were filed after the parliamentary elections held on Nov. 6, 2005 and the repeat parliamentary elections held May 13, 2006, Usubov said. Of them six criminal cases were associated with the activities of the central elections commissions' leaders. The office transferred 15 cases to court and the courts had already made the appropriate decisions on them.

The office received 365 complaints over the offenses committed during the parliamentary elections held in 2005. Of them 132 were received from the Central Electoral Commission, 35 - district election commissions and 193 - from citizens.

Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are scheduled for November 7, 2010. Parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan are held by the majority system in 125 constituencies.
