People clash with police in Lankaran region

08 September 2010 [13:14] - TODAY.AZ
A group of individuals clashed with police in southern Lankaran region of Azerbaijan on Sept. 7.
A group of about 100 people gathered outside the Lankaran Police Office building on Tuesday to protest police’s refusal to release Gismat Isayev who was allegedly arrested for hooliganism and got 5 days in a jail as a punishment. After the jail terms expired, it turned out that akhund of “Juma” mosque Ramin Fatullayev and his assistant Bagir Kazimov complained the police that Isayev allegedly insulted them while performing religious rites and even took the microphone, preventing the sermons.

Based on the complaint, the police filed a criminal case and arrested Isayev once again. His arrest caused outrage of supporters of a detainee who has different views on certain religious issues than mosque’s akhund. The Lankaran Police asked the crowd to disperse claiming they violated the law "On freedom of assembly”.

As the crowd failed to fulfill the requirement, the police started to disperse the rally. Police and protesters clashed as a result. 15 people were arrested. Although the police denied the use of force, witnesses say the opposite: even tear checkers were used against the protesters.
