A “roundtable” meeting on the role of raising awareness on human trafficking was held in Baku on September 15.

The event was co-organized by the Azerbaijan State Committee for Family, Women, and Children Affairs (SCFWCA), Department of the Interior Ministry to Combat Human Trafficking and YES global network's representation in Baku.
Addressing the meeting, chairwoman of SCFWC Hijran Huseynova said the problem had always been in the focus of attention of international organizations. She noted human trafficking causes the violation of the rights of women and children.
Huseynova pointed out, that an action plan on fight against human trafficking was approved in Azerbaijan and awareness raising campaign was conducted among the country`s people.
Attending the event, special envoy to the Secretary General of the United Nations, vice-chair of the Reflection Group on the long term future of the European Union, Latvian ex-president Ms. Vaira Vike-Freiberga praised what had been done in Azerbaijan to fight human trafficking.
Chief of the Interior Ministry's Department to Combat Human Trafficking Javad Shikhaliyev highlighted the progress made in Azerbaijan to fight human trafficking. He said the second National Action Plan for 2009-2013 had already been prepared.
Member of the Milli Majlis Ganira Pashayeva spoke of the role of press and NGOs in fight against human trafficking. Then, Hijran Huseynova presented the Committee's medal to Vaira Vike-Freiberga.
