The State Committee on Standardization, Metrology and Patents is preparing to use new Euro-2 environmental standards in Azerbaijan, the head of the State Committee's technical regulation and standardization department, Sabig Abdullayev, said at a press-conference today.
"The measurement of toxic emissions into the atmosphere is one aspect of the Euro-2 ecological standard. The Committee is currently preparing other proposals to be submitted to the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers," Abdullayev said.
He said that one subject on which the Committee will prepare proposals is filling stations and their equipment.
"We hope that these requirements will be used as national standards," Abdullayev said.
Abdullaev said emissions of harmful substances when drivers use their tires is among other matters related to the Euro-2 standard.
"The requirements, implemented since July 1, are only part of the whole complex of work to be undertaken in this direction. The new proposals will be submitted to the government by the committee in mid-October," Abdullayev said.
He said that the transition of the country to Euro-3 standards is being considered. Abdullayev also said that a complete ban on Soviet-made cars is not imminent because they are used by residents of regions of the country to obtain income.
"We decided to phase these cars out gradually," he said.
Euro-2 environmental standards have been applied to the vehicles and fuel in Azerbaijan since July 1.
