2,500th anniversary of Marathon race to be marked in Baku

The 2500th anniversary of the Marathon race will be marked in Baku on December 13, the embassy of Greece in Azerbaijan told APA. The jubilee events are organized in over 200 countries by Greek Foreign Ministry and Culture and Tourism Ministry. The events started in Athens on October 31.

The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC. It was fought between the citizens of Athens and a Persian force. According to a legend, a messenger Pheidippides ran 42.195 km, from Marathon to Athens, to announce the defeat of the Persians. At the end of the march he died of exhaustion. 42.95km run is called marathon now.
