Gang smuggling arms and drugs detained in Azerbaijan - UPDATE

The Azerbaijani Ministry of National Security neutralized the individuals, engaged in smuggling arms and drugs along the route of Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia.

The individuals, engaged in drug smuggling and illegally transporting firearms, ammunition, edged weapons to Azerbaijan through the protected border, were detained as a result of the operational measures, the Centre for Public Relations under the Ministry of National Security said.

A total of 61 kilograms of drugs was seized during these operations. Mahmud Arzu, engaged in illicit drug trafficking along the route of Iran-Azerbaijan-Russia. He was detained in St. Petersburg as a result of other joint operations conducted by the Ministry of National Security and the Russian drug control service. Roughly 40 kilograms 300 grams of hashish were revealed and seized.

It turned out that Makhmudov and an Iranian citizen, whose name is being identified, joined a criminal group. They agreed to send these drugs from Iran to Russia by hiding them in a shipping container with persimmon.

As a result of another operation, residents of Astara region - Mammadov Vagif, Hidayatov Hojahmad, his wife Hidayatova Yagut, Ibragimov Zaur, Akhmadov Habil and Akhmadov Muhandis were detained. It was found out that the above-mentioned people agreed and smuggled a large amount of drugs from Iran to Azerbaijan, by avoiding the customs inspection.

Vagif Mammadov asked Zaur Ibrahimov in October 2010 to mediate in buying a large amount of drugs to resell them. Ibrahimov asked his sister Yagut and her husband to join a criminal group. He instructed them to seek the necessary amount of drugs. Afterwards, Ibrahimov promised to pay $ 1,500. Then the spouses agreed with their friend Habil Akhmadov to buy drugs. Akhmadov met with Iranian citizens, whose names are being identified, and purchased 21 kilograms 106.7 grams of hashish near the village Palikesh in Astara region. He hid the drugs in the forest near the village.

Then Akhmadov carried drugs into the house of spouses, located in the village of Vagadi in Astara region. He gave drugs to Vagif Mammadov and Zaur Ibrahimov. Mamedov paid for these drugs 11,750 manat and $3,000. Then Mammadov carried drugs into the village of Kolatan in Astara region and hid them in his house. However, he was detained by members of the ministry of national security. Roughly 21 kilograms 106.7 grams of hashish were found and confiscated. Roughly 11,750 manat and $3,000, paid by Mammadov, were found and confiscated in Habil Akhmadov's house.

A criminal case was filed on Article 206.3.2 (smuggling on preliminary arrangement by group of persons), 234.4.1 and 234.4.3 (Illegal purchase or storage without a purpose of selling of narcotics or psychotropic substances in a quantity (amount) exceeding necessary for personal consumption and Manufacturing, purchase, storage, transfer, transportation or selling drug with a view of illegal manufacturing and processing of narcotics or psychotropic substances) of the Criminal Code. The appropriate criminal measures were applied.

As a result of another operation, Iranian citizens Nazari Inie Sofla Ali Ghulam and Rahimi Rustam, illegally smuggling firearms, ammunition to Azerbaijan through the protected customs border to sell them, were detained.

Ali Nazari and Rustam Rahimi agreed to illegally cross the state border of Azerbaijan at 02:03 local time. They smuggled a rifle of 7.92 caliber made by Czechoslovakia, 10 cartridges for this rifle and a dagger with a length of 593 mm to Azerbaijan in the settlement of Yardimli. They were arrested and the weapons seized.

An investigation is underway.
