Humprey Tonkin meets with the linguists at Azerbaijani University of Languages - PHOTOS

On November 23, the Emeritus of Hartford University, the well-known linguist, professor Humprey Tonkin had a meeting with the linguists in the museum-lectory named after Heydar Aliyev. H.Tonkin came to Baku to participate in the international scientific conference on the topic “Intercultural dialog: Linguistic, pedagogical and literary aspects”.

Samad Seyidov, the rector of AUL said that the main object of the meeting was to exchange views on language process and policy of Azerbaijan. “Mr. Tonkin is a specialist in his field and I hope we will benefit from this significant meeting” he said.

Professor Azad Mammadov, the head of the General Linguistics department gave comprehensive information about Tonkin’s biography, creative activity to the participants of the meeting. Professor Afgan Abdullayev, the dean of the English language School No1 spoke of the language families and national minorities living in Azerbaijan.

Professor Nizami Jafarov, the director of the Ataturk Center, and prominent linguist said that an order on “About State language” was adopted with difficulty. Nevertheless Azerbaijan language was admitted to the Turkish language family. He added that once Russian had been squezzing Azeri language, but according to the decree signed by national leader Heydar Aliyev in 2001 Azeri language continued its existence.

Humprey Tonkin stated that such kinds of meetings were of great significance, and added that the language policy in Azerbaijan arose a special interest in him, and he was pleased that national minorities had been maintained. He said that a language was playing an important role, and stressed that the international scientific conference is of great importance from linguistic point of view. Then a meeting was followed by exchange of views.
