
The first EU – Azerbaijan Sub-Committee meeting on Justice, Freedom, Security, Human Rights and Democratisation will take place in Baku on 30 November and 01 December 2010.
The meeting will be co-chaired by Mr Mahmud Mammadguliyev Deputy Foreign Minister and Mr John Kjaer, Head of Unit for Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Southern Caucasus at the European Commission.
"We are looking forward to our discussion tomorrow with the Government. Justice, Liberty, Security, Democracy are fundamental European values and we are encouraged by Azerbaijan's willingness to discuss and engage on its commitments in this field," Mr Kjaer said.
On the first day, the discussion will cover among others, the national framework for the protection of human rights, the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, the cooperation in international fora for the protection of human rights etc. Special consideration will be given to the elections and electoral framework, freedom of assembly and association, including functioning of the civil society. On the second day, the focus will be on the management of legal and illegal migration and border management, the organized crime and law enforcement, the fight against terrorism, including terrorism financing, the judicial cooperation, and legislative developments in Azerbaijan.
The EU team will consist of Mr. Rolf Timans, Head of Unit, DG RELEX, Ms. Karin Gatt-Rutter, South Caucasus team coordinator, DG RELEX, Ms. Deren Derya, DG RELEX, Mr. François Chauvin, DG HOME, Ms. Dafni Gogou, DG HOME, and Mr. Audrone Perkauskiene, Council Secretariat-General.
In advance of the meeting, the EU team held bilaratel discussion with NGOs, International organisations, EU consular services and the diplomatic missions in Baku.
