Azerbaijan bans bird hunting

03 December 2010 [12:25] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan has imposed a month ban on bird hunting from Dec.1, Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry's Spokesman Irada Ibrahimova said.

Recently, 4 bird flu cases (H1N1) raveled in Turkey, and one case in China and Georgia. Due to this, the bird hunting has been banned in the country, Ibrahimova said.

"The possibility of penetration of the bird flu into Azerbaijan increase due to The facts that wild birds migrate from the South-East Asia to Azerbaijan and our country borders with Georgia and Turkey," she said.

"The ministry suspended the licenses for hunting of birds in the country's territory. To adopt a final decision on this case, the ministry appealed to the State Commission dealing with prevention of bird flu in Azerbaijan and organizing the relevant agencies' activities in this area," Ibrahimova added.

Given a number of appeals by hunters, Azerbaijan declared an open hunting of birds in wetlands on Nov. 5.
