Ramps installed in Baku to ensure comfortable movement of people with disabilities do not comply with generally accepted standards, as well as safety standards, Chairman of the Azerbaijan Society of Disabled People Davud Rahimov said.
"In the city there is a shortage of ramps for comfortable movement of persons with disabilities and available ones do not meet requirements as they are too steep and high in most cases,” Rahimov added.
“By using these ramps, the disabled get second disability as a wheelchair can slide off them and a man can fall down and get injured."
It is necessary to increase number of ramps for the disabled, as well as ensure that new devices are suitable for use, Rahimov noted.
Persons with disabilities face obstacles at every turn that grow up to the problem, he added.
For people with disabilities to move freely around the city, it is necessary to adapt the entire infrastructure, to create "smooth" parts of sidewalks from the roadway and equip public transport in a proper way, Rahimov said.
