Azerbaijani Ecology Ministry says sewage thrown to Caspian Sea

The Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry publicized the results of monitoring conducted in 2010 in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea.

Inspections conducted by the Ministry's Office of Integrated Environmental Monitoring of the Caspian Sea revealed the absence of a unified sewer network in the northern and southern coastal zone, where  are located recreation areas and beaches.

During the monitoring it was discovered 299 drains. The drains make anthropogenic influence to the Sea.

In 2010, there were implemented measures for parsing and transfer of hydraulic structures and unexploited flyovers to shore, rising from the bottom of the Baku bay vehicles flooded and waterlogged, including the complete elimination of old oil wells. The ministry conducted activities for the remediation of oil-polluted area Bibiheybat bay and landscaping.

The ministry also planned to transfer certain parts of the Hovsan channel to a closed system and put into operation new devices for water purification at the Oil Rocks and Chilov.
