
Azerbaijan will hold the presentation of the fourth phase of Saloglu UXO clearance project at the NATO headquarters, Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action (ANAMA) told APA.
The presentation will be held at the meeting of NATO/Partnership for Peace (PfP) Trust Fund this week. Director General of ANAMA Nazim Ismayilov has left for Belgium to attend the meeting.
ANAMA Director will inform the donors and the leadership of the organization about the work done within the framework of Saloglu project supported by NAMSA.
The meeting of PfP Trust Fund is organized by NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) every year.
In the fourth phase the ordnances, which were taken to the surrounding settlements as metals, will be rendered harmless. The former shooting range of the former Soviet army on Azerbaijan-Georgia border in Jeyranchol will also be cleared of munitions and mines.
Saloglu was the largest Soviet ammunition warehouse in the South Caucasus. The explosion committed by the Russians in August, 1991, lasted for four days, 138 bunkers were destroyed. As the result of the explosion over 300,000 pieces of UXOs were scattered over a large area. 545 hectare-area underwent surface clearance, 261 435 UXOs were found there. The second phase covered subsurface clearance of the area of 220 hectares, 111 911 UXOs were found there. Over 173 000 UXOs have been found in the ongoing third phase.
