18 February 2011 [17:46] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijan has become a member of the Codex Alimentarius Commission - a joint program of FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) and WHO (World Health Organization) on standards for food products, the Azerbaijani State Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Patents said on Friday.

Information on the country's joining Codex Alimentarius Commission was reflected in the FAO General Secretariat’s letter sent to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, the state committee said.

Coordination of recommendations on introducing food standards of Codex Alimentarius, İSO, HACCP, as well as EU standards in the national system of standards was entrusted to the country’s State Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Patents by the order of the Azerbaijani Cabinet of Ministers dated July 23, 2010. In this regard, a national Codex Alimentarius committee has been created under the State Committee, as well as a statue of this committee has been approved.

The national committee is a body coordinating the activity of governmental and nongovernmental organizations in introducing food standards in the country on the recommendation of the Codex Alimentarius. The national committee’s decisions have advisory character.

The Azerbaijani State Committee for Standardization, Metrology and Patents has approved five state standards based on Codex Alimentarius standards.
