The number of illegitimate children has increased by more than 20% in Azerbaijan, said Reyhana Kerimova, the head of the Register Service of the Justice Ministry's Head Notary and Civil Registry Department.
She added that up to 17,000 illegitimate children were registered in Azerbaijan in 2010 or over 3,000 children more than in 2009.
She said requiring a medical certificate during marriage may increase the number of illegitimate children.
"Up to 160,000 people marry in Azerbaijan annually. More than half of these marriages are concluded in regions and villages," she said. "Some problems may occur in settlements that are not equipped with the appropriate equipment."
