Azerbaijan’s Justice Ministry is intensively working towards the nationalization of the family names.

Chief of the ministry’s notariat and registration office Ilgar Mammadov sent a letter to all registrar offices in the regions.

While Azerbaijan has achieved its independence, relevant steps are taken for nationalization of the family names as one of the main factors in the national identification of our people, the letter reads. More than 500 000 people changed ends of their family names –ov and –yev.

The decision on changing of family names’ ends was made by the Special Commission of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The commission offered to the Azerbaijani citizens to give national family names with the ends –li, -lu, -ly or –oglu, -qizi to their new-born children and not to use the words describing titles.

The registrar offices were urged to change the family names’ ends voluntarily, to ease relevant legal procedures, as well as to do it free. They were also urged to address the people’s appeals about the changing of family names’ ends in a short time.
