Azerbaijan discusses harmonizing list of academic specialties with UNESCO list

The High Attestation Commission (HAC) of Azerbaijan is examining the opportunity of bringing the list of academic specialties into conformity with the lists of specialties set up by the UNESCO and other international organizations, HAC deputy chairman Vali Huseynov said.
A new list will be approved following the results of discussions carried out under the 2009-2015 National Science Development Strategy of Azerbaijan, he said.

President of the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan Mahmoud Kerimov said earlier that intake on UNESCO-offered specialties to research & development institutes’ facilities of doctoral candidacy was expected to occur. It is currently debated whether the intake should occur on specialties available in the UNESCO list or on the previous specialties, according to Kerimov.

The Cabinet of Ministers of Azerbaijan has adopted the plan of entering the National Academy of Sciences’ institution of doctoral candidacy and the rest scientific institutes’ facility of doctoral candidacy. Under the plan, the National Academy of Sciences shall provide 176 vacancies and 39 vacancies on the fulltime department and postal department, respectively, for the scientific degree of PhD. Other organizations where institutions of doctoral candidacy are under establishment the fulltime department and the postal department envision 108 vacancies and 81 vacancies, respectively; on the degree of doctor of sciences: 18 vacancies and 30 vacancies at fulltime and postal departments, respectively; and 145 vacancies and 13 vacancies on the scientific degree obtained through dissertation and on the degree of doctor of sciences, respectively.
