On the first day European Junior Wrestling Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, Azerbaijani freestyle wrestlers won one gold and two bronze medals. Akhmednabi Gvartsatilov (60 kg), beating rivals from Moldova, Albania and Russia, reached the final, then won Turkish wrestler and became the European champion.
Ruslan Gasimov (50 kg) lost to Romanian wrestler and fizzled out. Eldzhan Usubzade (74 kg) reached the semi-finals, losing to Atsamaz Sanakoyev from Russia.
But in the battle for third place, Usubzade won Sergei Odinak from Ukraine and grabbed the bronze. Said Hamidov (96 kg) lost in the quarterfinals to the Belarusian wrestler, but in the battle for third place he has defeated opponents from Croatia and Georgia, thus winning the bronze.
Four Azerbaijani wrestlers will perform at the Championship on June 20. Ghalib Aliyev will face Ukrainian athlete in the 1/8 of the final, Bakhtiar Israfilli will meet Slovakian rival in the qualifying round, Parviz Akhundov will meet Turkish sportsman in the 1/8 of the final and Ali Magomedabirov in the qualifying round will meet Hungarian athlete.
