Azerbaijan is represented by the President of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation Kamaladdin Heydarov at a special congress of AIBA, which has just started in Baku. The International Amateur Boxing Association says it will investigate allegations that millions of dollars have been paid to guarantee that Azerbaijan wins two gold medals at next year’s London Olympics.
The allegations, by an unnamed insider, were broadcast by the BBC on their Newsnight program on Thursday and reported on the website www.bbc.co.uk. The BBC’s report comes just days before the world amateur boxing championships get under way on September 26 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Ching-Kuo Wu, AIBA’s president, said the BBC claims were “totally untrue and ludicrous” but added he would investigate them - a move welcomed by the International Olympic Committee. “I will immediately conduct an investigation into this because there is a zero tolerance policy in AIBA,” he said. Azerbaijan Boxing Federation also denied the allegations.
With the approval of the AIBA Executive Committee, the AIBA President has immediately launched the AIBA Special Investigation Committee made up of the individuals listed below to examine the allegations. The Committee members are: Tom Virgets – Chairman of AIBA Disciplinary Commission, Humbert Furgoni – Member of AIBA, Ethics Commission and Chairman of WSB Commission, Dennis O’Connell – Member of AIBA Disciplinary Commission, Antonio de Guzman – Member of AIBA Disciplinary Commission, Ricardo Contreras – AIBA Legal Counsel.
The Chairman, Mr Tom Virgets, will immediately convene the first investigatory meeting at the AIBA World Boxing Championships currently being held in Baku.
