Iran offers condolences over UAE royal's death

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has sent Iran's condolences to his United Arab Emirates (UAE) counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan over the death of UAE president's brother.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed al-Nahyan's body was discovered yesterday, four days after he went missing following the crash of his recreational aircraft into a Moroccan lake.

The UAE royal died while the Spanish pilot of his glider survived in a March 26 crash into the artificial lake created by the Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah dam and is in stable condition.

In a telephone conversation with his UAE counterpart, Mottaki expressed his deepest sympathy to the royal family and the government of the UAE for the tragic incident.

The UAE foreign minister thanked Mottaki for his sympathy and called for the strengthening amicable relations between the two countries.

Sheikh Ahmed, 41, was the younger brother of the UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who is also the ruler of Abu Dhabi. He was the Managing Director of the Abu Dhabi Investment Fund, reputedly the largest sovereign wealth fund in the world with assets of around $450 billion, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Zayed Foundation for Charity and Humanitarian Works.
