U.S. Ambassador to Georgia underlines U.S support to transport Turkmenistan gas via Azerbaijan

Speaking at the GIOGIE 2007 [6th Georgian International Oil, Gas, Energy and Infrastructure Conference] hosted by Tbilisi's Sheraton Metechi Palace U.S. Ambassador to Georgia John Tefft hailed the plan transport Turkmenistan gas to Europe via Azerbaijan and Georgia.

According to Tefft, the US administration is actively engaged in the negotiation process. "Talks are in progress on the issue. Obviously, Russia may try to create drawbacks."

Recently, media sources have been citing Araz Arzimov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan urging the European countries to purchase the Turkmenistan gas bypassing Russia.

As the Azeri diplomat explained, Turkmenistan gas will be transported to European markets via the Trans Caucasian Pipeline, which will be put into operation in 2006. The Georgian Times
