Alicia Keys: 'Upbringing made me avoid drugs'

The Element of Freedom singer told You that a childhood spent in Manhattan showed her the devastating effect of drug addiction first-hand, which subsequently convinced her to steer clear of narcotics.

"I always make sure I stay connected to the real world," Keys explained. "The way I avoid temptations, what did it for me, was that I grew up around drugs, sex, alcohol and death.

"I think that when you see that in your life, you know what it does to you and have no desire to do it."
