Can whales paint pictures? Think before you respond, as at the Qingdao Polar Ocean World oceanarium in China the answer might surprise you.
A seven-year-old Beluga whale named Xiao Qiang began his career as a painter after a visitor left a paintbrush behind, which he immediately grabbed and began to play with. His adoring fans can’t get enough of his artistic creations, which go for hundreds of pounds apiece.

“He showed a lot of interest in painting right from the start so now all we have to do is give him the brushes and hold the paper while he paints with his mouth. His favorite colour seems to be blue and he’s best of all at seascapes. His people always look like seals,” says his trainer, Zhang Yong.

Whale experts claim that the Beluga whale, which resembles a dolphin, is also known as the sea canary because of the high-pitched sounds it makes. Belugas are unlike other whales in that they are born with more soft tissue around their mouth, which is what allows Xiao Qiang to manipulate the brush.

It seems that this Beluga in addition to having artistic talent also has a sense of humor.

“He loves to play jokes on his keepers. Sometimes he deliberately paints them instead of the paper”, adds Yong.

The turning of his head for painting is a natural movement for the Beluga. In the wild, this is often performed when the whale is removing sand from its food.

It is said that Belugas are smarter than other whales but whoever thought they would paint better than others of their ilk? Vincent Van Gogh, eat your ear out, or something like that.
