UN Ex-Secretary General: "During my visit to Azerbaijan local media wrote my wife was Armenian"

04 March 2006 [12:06] - TODAY.AZ
"It is not a secret to anybody that my resignation from UN Secretary General post in 1996 was a result of US secret diplomacy. It is an undeniable fact that the US Secretary General in Clinton's administration Warren Christopher exerted pressure on the heads of the countries not to support my candidacy during his visit to African countries. A range of articles written against me is also known to everybody."

"We had serious divergence of opinions on the resolution of the both Yugoslavian and Somali problems. The US wanted to bombard Yugoslavia during strong war in Bosnia in 1994-1995. But all, France, Spain and England didn’t support the bombardment, either did I. I was offered compromises such as; you would turn 75, your birthday would solemnly be marked, party could be organized in the Whiter House and so on.

I answered: "UN secretary general must be as a real secretary general, but sometimes he must be able to act as a general. Americans doesn’t need a secretary general but a mere general. So, only US out of 15 members of UN Security Council, voted against my being reelected to this post in 1996," Gali said.

Butros Gali admitted that his distant relative Fakhri Abu Nur imported oil from Iraq when he was Secretary General of the UN.

"He is my distant relative. Fakhri Abu Nur had engaged in oil import before I was the Secretary General. He signed oil contracts with Iraq after I resigned. If I had been engaged in oil trade with Iraq, I wouldn't have needed a mediator. I have never been engaged in oil business.

I visited Armenia and Azerbaijan during resolution process. When I visited Baku, the local media allegedly wrote that my wife is Armenian. When I visited Yerevan, their local media spread information that my brother was allegedly engaged in oil business," he added.

Butros Gali said that corruption existed in the UN as well when he was the Secretary General.

"We conducted inner investigation and dismissed persons. $1.2bn was allocated to the security problems from the UN budget, lots of means was provided for peaceful missions. So, embezzlement is possible".

Touching on US attack on Iraq, Butros Gali said that it is illegal, APA reports.
