Anna Mkrtchyan, a member of the Armenian National Assembly from Serzh Sargsyan's "I Have the Honor" faction, staged a provocative act during today’s parliamentary session. Mkrtchyan referred to the map of Armenia with internationally recognized borders, which was displayed above the speaker’s rostrum, as “scrap metal” and tore it down. She then replaced it with a "map" of Armenia that depicted Azerbaijani territories as part of Armenia.
Following this act, security personnel from the Armenian Parliament removed the piece of paper that Mkrtchyan had affixed to the rostrum.
This raises the question: Will Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan continue to insist that Armenia has no territorial claims against Azerbaijan and that there will be no changes to the country’s constitution?
Are people like Mkrtchyan, who engage in such actions, truly representative of Armenia’s interests? Are they not acting on behalf of revanchist elements within the country?
Pashinyan has repeatedly stated that Armenia is committed to peace and has no intention of seeking revenge. Yet, actions like those of Mkrtchyan suggest otherwise. If Armenia genuinely wants peace, it has an opportunity to demonstrate this commitment in practice: by holding individuals like Mkrtchyan accountable for inciting tension and undermining diplomatic efforts.
As long as figures like Mkrtchyan face little to no repercussions for such provocations, it will be difficult to achieve a lasting peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. Without accountability for those who promote revanchism, there can be no real progress toward peace and stability in the region.
