Macron's policy on New Caledonia not working

31 May 2024 [14:17] - TODAY.AZ
Macron's policy towards New Caledonia is not working, a new path is needed.
Today.az reports, citing Day.az that this was stated in an article by Jimmy Naun, adviser to the Kanak Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) in the prestigious British edition of the Guardian.

According to him, the unrest in New Caledonia is a direct result of the biased and persistent political maneuvers of Emmanuel Macron aimed at disrupting the process of self-determination of New Caledonia.

Jimmy Nauna noted that the electoral reform bill passed at the French National Assembly in Paris two weeks ago provoked riots in Noumea (the capital of New Caledonia)

"Since the introduction of the bill on electoral reforms to the French Senate in April this year, peaceful rallies, demonstrations, marches and sit-ins have taken place in the center of Noumea and in New Caledonia as a whole, in which more than ten thousand people took part. But the French government has nevertheless put forward a legislative initiative, despite clear signs that this law will cause riots and violent reactions at the local level," the article says.

The article notes that Macron's behavior in the situation in New Caledonia is causing controversy among political groups in France.

Nauna stressed that Macron's visit to New Caledonia last week was also a propaganda move aimed at political gain.

"Even within his party, Macron has lost support for the passage of the electoral reform bill through the Versailles Congress (a joint session of parliament)," Nauna writes.
The article also mentions that after returning to Paris, Macron thought about putting electoral reforms to a national referendum within the framework of the French constitution. After the visit, FLNKS issued a statement repeating its demand to suspend or cancel the electoral reform process. In addition, it was necessary to send a high-quality independent mission to New Caledonia in order to reduce tensions and create a more favorable environment.
