Azeri committee tightens control over clergy

14 May 2006 [09:50] - TODAY.AZ
In view of the deepening US-Iranian divide, the Azeri State Committee for Work with Religious Associations has tightened control over mosques and religious organizations, the committee chairman Rafig Aliyev told journalists Friday.

According to AssA-Irada, Aliyev said the committee was taking a number of steps to prevent the dragging of Azeri clerics into the tension.

"We are working with heads of mosques, religious communities and departments, and stating what our policies are. Therefore, there can be no provocation on the part of religious communities in Azerbaijan," he said.

There are 352 registered religious communities in Azerbaijan and none of them has been engaged in anti-state activities.
