World Conservation Union to hold monitoring in occupied Azerbaijani territories

19 December 2006 [13:33] - TODAY.AZ
World Conservation Union (IUCN) will hold monitoring in the occupied Azerbaijani territories to investigate the ecological situation and harm on the biodiversity.

IUCN expressed its intention in the letter sent in reply to ENRM's survey. The letter says ENRM's offer to be the member of the international organization was welcomed.

"Unproductive use of the natural resources is one of the serious dangers to the world biodiversity. This is also actual for the Caucasus. Aggression on the agriculture and forests, illegal use of the animal and plant kinds in Southern and Eastern Europe informs of the increase of the danger for rich natural heritage. This destruction causes tense situation especially in the conflicting zones and holding independent monitoring in these territories is usually limited."

IUCN intends to establish Program Office in the South Caucasus in order to hold intensive monitoring.

"Absence of independent biodiversity monitoring system in the conflicting zones in the South Caucasus, Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Nagorno Karabakh and non-assessment of the events causing the disorder of the environment’s stability is a serious problem."

The letter writes that IUCN, having definite practice in these issues, hopes that cooperation with Azerbaijan will have positive results and Tamas Marghescu Director of the IUCN Regional Office for Europe will contact with ENRM, Azerbaijan Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry told the APA.
