National Television and Radio Council chairman Nushirevan Meherremli told APA that the council made unanimous decision at the meeting on Thursday. Turkish channel TRT will continue its broadcast.
"The council will send letters on the decision to the relevant organizations and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Azerbaijan foreign policy department will inform Russia and Turkey about the issue. Azerbaijan signed legal document with Russia and Turkey in 1995. The contract says that Azerbaijan must inform the government about the closure of its channel six months before. We gave time till July not to harm the relations between the countries. Kanal D will be stopped from January as no contract has been signed with it," he noted.
He said that the Russian channels may continue to broadcast in Azerbaijan in case if Russia allows Azerbaijani channels to be broadcasted in the country within six months.
"I met with Vasiliy Istratov, Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan and agreed to reconsider the issue if Russia retransmits Azeri channels," he said.
