Press conference on captured Azeri soldier held

20 March 2007 [09:49] - TODAY.AZ
Elmira Orujova, chairwoman of the 'Hesret Yolu' Public Union of Assistance to War Prisoners and Hostages held a press conference in connection with Azerbaijani Army soldier Samir Mammadov, who was captured by Armenian Armed Forces in December, 2006.

Elmira Orujova reproached the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), personal representative of OSCE chairman-in-office Andrzej Kasprzyk, Leo Platvoet, PACE rapporteur of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population and co-chair of International Working Group Berhard Klaze for passive attitude towards soldier's fate.

She said that ICRC exchanged 650 Armenian prisoners for 350 Azerbaijanis in the past 13 years.

"The ICRC Office in Yerevan brought 6 answers to 10 letters. The investigations show that Samir did not write them. The letters were written in Cyrillic but Mammadov has never written in Cyrillic. Mammadov's teacher in literature confirmed it," she said.

Elmira Orujova called on social organization to be active and said that if Samir Mammadov is not released soon, they will establish a committee to defend his rights and start signature collecting campaign. APA
