Azerbaijani journalists picket on World Press Freedom Day

Azerbaijani journalists held a picket in front of Yasamal cemetery, where Elmar Huseynov, assassinated editor-in-chief of Monitor journal was buried, to mark 3 May-World Press Freedom Day.

Editor-in-chief of Ganun journal Shahaz Khuduoglu spoke about the current state of the press. He said that this day is marked as a holiday all over the world.

"But the state of Azerbaijani press, pressure on journalists make it hard to celebrate this holiday," he stressed.

Noting recent arrest of Eynulla Fetullayev, founder and editor-in-chief of Gundelik Azerbaijan newspaper, assault on editor of the newspaper Uzeyir Jafarov, Khuduoglu stressed the importance of detaining and punishing the assaulters.

The resolution of the picket was publicized. It says that people are in danger and demands stopping pressure, finding Elmar Huseynov's murderers, releasing arrested journalists and reconsidering court's fines on newspapers.

Following this, the journalists visited the graves of Elmar Huseynov and Nejef Nejefov, APA reports.
