"We have started to receive messages about the alarming criminal situation in the Southern regions of Azerbaijan, especially information about violence against women", said head of the Women's Crisis Center Matanat Azizova.

According to her, teenagers become witnesses of such a violence, especially, children who are used to see how their fathers beat their mothers and they grow up assured of the correctness of such a lifestyle and they believe that violence against women is a normal thing.

She also said that the level of control over the growing generation by the regional and district police stations, differs from what was in the Soviet times.

"The same can be said about schools, where there is a position of a school psychologist. But this position is purely formal and no work is held in the sphere of the psychological component of studying. However, schools are intended for educating the future citizen of our country in period when a personality forms", said Azizova.

She said that the import of drugs has doubled as compared to 2007.

"The main channels of supplies of drugs to Azerbaijan lie through the southern regions of the country. I have personally seen that drugs are sold in one of the parks, locating in the southern region of the country, which is one of the possible reasons of the increase in the number of crimes, including among young people.

She also added that the problem of finding one's place in life can also be a reason of the increased number of crimes.

"This problem faces not only the young people of the southern regions of Azerbaijan but also the young people of the whole country. However, this problem is hypertrophied in the country's regions, as there are fewer work places, professions and other forms of activity, as compared to Baku. Moreover, in Baku there are more chances for legal earning of good money. In the result, young provincials are searching ways for getting rich through crimes, which is proven by the increased number of "forts" in the regions and drug addicts", Azizova said.

According to her, everything is deteriorated by the situation, when any crime can be concealed for money in the southern regions of Azerbaijan.

"It is necessary to take all measures to eliminate existing problems. Otherwise, the future of Azerbaijan can be frustrating. The number of drug addicts, drunkards and prostitutes is growing with the simultaneous decline in the number of educated people, striving for further development", she concluded.
