Hospital exploded in Azerbaijan’s Garadag Region, casualties reported - UPDATED

Surgeon lost his right eye and hand in the aftermath of explosion of grenade on his hand yesterday, Clinic Medical Center told APA that health of surgeon Ravayat Mutallimov and nurse Reyhan Pirguliyeva is satisfactory. They were operated on yesterday. Right hand of Mutallimov was cut from wrist and patients were cleaned from many splinters on their bodies. Mutalliomov’s right eye lost eye-sight. Both of injured men receive medical treatment.

Investigation bodies refrain from announcing the main versions on explosion, which occured at hospital No 19 of Baku city on Tuesday.

"It will be possible to speak of preliminary versions only upon completion of investigation measures", said senior investigator of the investigation department of police station of Garadagh region Arif Zahidov.

He said the health of the two men, who sufferred in the result of the explosion, does not allow to learn the circumstances of the incident.

Zahidov reported about the aspects of the event, known to the investigation.

He said at 8:30 the police station received a call about an explosion at hospital No 19 of Lokbatan settlement. An operative group has been sent to the spot. It was revealed that the explosion occurred in the surgery department. A doctor and a nurse fell a victim. Doctor's arm was torn off in the result of explosion.

"The investigation is holding an expertise to define the type of the explosive substance, as well as the circumstances under which it turned out to be at the hospital", noted the investigator.

According to Interfax-Azerbaijan, the room where the explosion occured is too damaged. The traces are obvious not only on the walls but also on the cellar of 4 meters in height.

Law-enforcement bodies told APA that the explosion occurred in an operation room at 09.30 today.

Grenade exploded on hand of surgeon Ravayat Gudrat Mutallimov and as a result of explosion the doctor and nurse Reyhan Pirguliyeva were seriously injured. They were urgently taken to Clinic Medical Center.

Clinic Medical Center told APA that injured men were operated on and placed to resuscitation ward. The doctor is under bad condition, but Pirguliyeva's state is satisfactory.

Garadag Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the reports and did not provide additional information about the explosion.
