Amnesty Act adopted at initiative of Heydar Aliyev Foundation applies to 9,564 prisoners

The Amnesty Act adopted at the initiative of the First Lady of Azerbaijan, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO Mehriban Aliyeva has covered 9,564 prisoners.

"Total of 8,604 of them are men, 960 - women and and 23 - underage. In addition, the imprisonment period of 516 people were reduced by half," the Heydar Aliyev Foundation said.

About 95 percent of those covered by the Amnesty Act do not pose any public threat and they did not commit serious crimes. The remaining part of the released prisoners are those who were jailed for serious crimes and have left little time of imprisonment term.

As a result of humanism policy pursued by Azerbaijan's nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev since 1995, nine Amnesty Acts have been adopted which were applied to more than 96,000 prisoners more than 25,000 of whom were released so far.
