The Council of Europe (CoE) together with the Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Ministry is implementing a program on the protection of natural habitat in the country, the organization said.
The program, which will last until the end of 2011, aims to identify and protect natural habitats, and is part of Emerald Network.

The Emerald Network was established in accordance with the European Convention of Nature and Natural Habitats (Bern Convention), and promotes the creation of national networks of protected areas. This concerns all parties agreed and the observers of the Convention.

Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine also were included into a list of countries participating in the establishment of networks under the joint program.

Azerbaijan is in charge to choose regions special for Azerbaijan and types of habitation in accordance with recommendations and resolutions of the Berne convention. Azerbaijan should identify all potential areas by the end of the project. The first national workshop in the form of a scientific meeting, to be followed by a visit to potential areas for the Emerald Network, will be held on Aug 11-13.

This program is funded by the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe.
