At today’s press conference, Chief of the Armenian Police Alik Sargsyan reported an unprecedented rise in crime in the first half of 2009 as compared with the corresponding period of last year – 6,849 against 3,898 crimes (71%). General Sargsyan also reported 84.7% crime detection against 75%. However, a lower percentage of solved murder cases were registered.
Among the causes of a higher number of crimes are the social conditions or economic crisis, registration of numerous minor crimes, an unprecedented rise in the number of economic and drug-related crimes.
General Sargsyan does not see any problem in the recent crime rise. Rather he hopes that “better” figures will be registered next year.
A few days ago the Armenian Police released information explaining the causes of the crime rise. According to the report, the political stability in the country enables the law-enforcement agencies to focus attention on their immediate actions under law.
