08 September 2009 [12:16] - TODAY.AZ
The Azerbaijani crew members of the Kramco trade ship, which crashed on Monday in the Black Sea near the Kilyos district of Istanbul, are in a stable condition, Azerbaijan's General Consul in Turkey Sayyad Aran said.
He said that all the crew members had been rescued. There were no fatalities and no one was injured after the accident.

"The crew members are in hospitals. Their condition is stable," Aran said.

The Kramco dry cargo ship sailing under the Cambodian flag with Azerbaijanis as well on board crashed  on the Black Sea near the Kilyos district of Istanbul on Sept. 7

Aran said that there was a team of 12 sailors on board, eight of them are Azerbaijanis, two are Georgians, one is Ukrainian and one is Turkish.

The distress signal from the cargo ship went around 17.30 local time, NTV reported.  A rescue team was sent to the site immediately after the crash. Cargo ship split in two parts.

Turkey's Coast Guard boats and helicopters were involved with the rescue.

The reason for the crash is not yet known.

According to reports by Turkish media, the stern of cargo ship has sank. The bow was still on the surface of the sea a mile from Kilyos.

Observers say Istanbul has once again avoided an ecological catastrophe that would have been fraught with unpredictable consequences for the megalopolis of 12-million people.

Every year over 100,000 vessels transport 150 million tons of oil via the Bosporus which runs through Istanbul.
