Azerbaijani Press Council to debate granting privileges to journalists

02 October 2009 [16:43] - TODAY.AZ
Azerbaijani Press Council will debate granting transport privileges to journalists.
"Certain consultations should be held with related organizations to solve this issue," chairman of the Press Council Aflatun Amashov said.

Over 3,300 media outlets have been registered in Azerbaijan; 600 of them operate now. Roughly 400 newspapers and magazines are published. There are over 20 TV channels, 50 E-media outlets, 20 information agencies. The rest are internet resources

Amashov said that several problems hamper solving this issue.

"The major problem is lack of accurate information about number of journalists in Azerbaijan," chairman of the council said.

Major reason in overwhelming majority of cases is the lack contracts of media outlets with journalists," he said.

"Though we raised an issue on contracts, unfortunately, contracts between leadership and journalists were not concluded for some reasons. On the other hand, requirements of the labor code were not observed in editorial offices in which contracts were concluded," Amashov said.

Amashov said that the issue on journalists' privileges in public transport and other spheres will be raised again.

"Journalists very often use transport due to their work. It is necessary to give them certain benefits given small salary of journalists. Thus, we will again start issuing cards after studying the issue. Consultations will be launched on benefits with the related organizations after the number of journalists who need these cards is determined," he added.
