UN General Assembly recognizes March 21 International Day of Nowruz

Feb.23, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on "International Day of Nowruz," the Azerbaijani Permanent Mission to UN reported.
"Previously, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has developed a relevant draft resolution and submitted it to the Azerbaijani Permanent Mission to UN for further harmonization with other countries and ensuring its adoption at the UN for recognition of the Nowruz holiday as the International Day of Nowruz. The Azerbaijani mission has organized a series of meetings to this end," the source said.

Feb.23, Azerbaijani Permanent Representative to UN Agshin Mehdiyev presented a draft resolution entitled "International Day of Nowruz" initiated by Azerbaijan and developed in collaboration with Afghanistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey, Albania, India and Macedonia under the 49th paragraph of the 64th session of UN General Assembly, entitled "Culture of Peace".

Mehdiyev stressed the importance of recognizing the Nowruz holiday March 21 as International Day for the promotion of solidarity and peaceful neighborhood, tolerance among peoples, intercultural dialogue and understanding, and urged UN Member States to adopt a resolution.

Following the meeting, the resolution was adopted unanimously.

Under the resolution, UN General Assembly recognizes the March 21 International Day of Nowruz.
